Yes, stupid, made up holiday for merchandising purposes. BUT... its cute and makes me happy and honestly, yes! there should be a day set aside for heart shaped food!
But along with the hearts comes thoughts of love. What girl doesn't want a handsome guy (sideburns optional!) to be head over heels for her? To think she's the greatest thing ever? To ask her, "Will you be my valentine?" ever so timidly, afraid that someone has beat him to it. That seems like it would be the bestest feeling ever. Girls who have had that happen have told me it *is* the best thing ever. Well, until they got engaged and then they said *that* was the best feeling ever. ;)
But I've been thinking- what makes this so appealing? Why do we want to make guys crazy for us? I mean, honestly, guys in love are kind of... silly at times. They don't think straight, talk straight, walk straight. Why would we want to be the cause of that? Sure, its cute. And La-La-Land seems like a nice place. Buuuut.... why does it make us happy to have someone tripping all over themselves in our presence? That can just be embarrassing. ;)
From a little bit of experience, I think we like the power. We like to feel like we're needed, wanted, desired above everything. We like to know someone likes us-- that's a totally natural, good thing! We like the feeling of superiority. We have someone thinking about us. We got a mysterious note that says "Je t'aime". They're wrapped around our pretty little finger, according to George Strait. We like to be missed. To be so saturated into their brain that the little neurons are misfiring. :P
Trouble with natural, God-given feelings and tendencies is that, thanks to our daddy Adam, they get blown waaay out of proportion and become sins very easily. I don't think Jesus trips when His Bride walks into the room.
How do we take these desires to be needed, wanted, useful and turn them back into God-glorifying ways of life? I'm gonna guess it has something to do with dying and not focusing on ourselves. Pretty much flipping all those desires on their heads. We shouldn't feel superior, we should be humble- knowing we don't deserve this attention. We should think about others, instead of expecting others to think about us. We shouldn't worry about who mysteriously loves us- we should proclaim to our families, "I love you!" We should use our pretty little finger... and the rest of our hands, to wash dishes, wipe noses, hold a weaker hand. So not stuff I do very cheerfully yet.
Lord willing, I'll be in la-la-land one day, just as in love with my dude as he is with me. Until then, I'm going to live in this world, making it a better place.

Thank you for saying exactly what I have been trying to a complete thought all day. Instead of brushing this day off or tsk-tsk-ing the fact that we need a holiday to reflect on and return the love that is bestowed on us, I have been trying to think how I can apply love in a more active form into my life. My pastor always says, "Life is about Love, and Love is about laying down your life."
Holidays are so thought-provoking and inspiring. Who knows where we'll be next Valentines Day??
Beautiful, Livvy.
